The Old Rectory offers quality Bed & Breakfast in a historic house. Situated near Boscastle on the beautiful North Cornish Coast. The house is surrounded by 3 acres of mature south facing gardens including a Victorian walled garden. Thomas Hardy, the great novelist and poet, stayed at The Old Rectory in the 1870s while drawing up plans for the restoration of St Juliot Church. Here he met and fell in love with the Rector's sister- in- law, Emma Lavinia Gifford, who became his wife in 1874. The romance led to the novel "A pair of Blue Eyes", some of the action of which takes place at The Rectory, and to some of his finest poetry. Come and stay as our guests and enjoy a brush with history.
The Old Rectory is a family home and we are the fifth generation to have lived here. The house has been recently updated and is decorated in period style. It is centrally heated throughout. The walled garden supplies ample organically grown fresh fruit and vegetables in season, as well as free range eggs. Breakfast is served in the Entrance Hall and consists of a wide range of Cornish produce including our home made marmalade and preserves. Guests have their own sitting room with views over the terrace and gardens. Vegetarian and continental breakfasts catered for. Packed lunches by arrangement.
There is a choice of 3 bedrooms, all with tea and coffee
making facilities, colour television, radio alarm and hairdryer.
Mr Hardy`s Room. Antique carved double bed, En-suite bathroom with large power shower. Views of the surrounding countryside.
Rector's Room. One six foot double bed, which can be arranged as two single beds. En-suite bathroom with a luxury whirlpool and shower over. Views of the garden
Emma's Room. King Size bed with en suite shower and original `thunder box'. Views of lower garden and croquet lawn.
d)The Old Stable . The Old Stable is situated at the rear of the house and has its own separate entrance. Breakfast is served in the house. Recently converted and centrally heated throughout and with its own wood burning stove. It has a King Size bed and its own ensuite with a bath and shower. One well behaved dog allowed in this room only. Please notify us when you book if you intend to bring a dog.
Guests are very welcome to explore and enjoy our beautiful mature south facing garden. We believe that many of the older trees and shrubs were planted by Rev. Manning who was the first Rector to live here. The grounds extend to 3 acres and contain a wide variety of plants. The woodland garden has magnificent rhododendrons, azaleas and camellias under planted with meconopsis and primulas.
Further up the slope stroll along the herbaceous border to Hardy's Seat- a place as peaceful today as when Thomas and Emma sat here over 100 years ago. Behind the high stone wall travel back in time to the walled kitchen garden and see where we tend our freshly grown organic produce. We serve fruit and vegetables from the garden whenever possible and our free range hens produce the freshest eggs.
The surrounding area boasts wonderful scenery, diverse wildlife and rich cultural heritage. The beautiful fishing port of Boscastle and the surrounding area has an excellent choice of pubs and restaurants to suit every need. For people who enjoy walking there are plenty of interesting walks from our house to give the car a rest! Tintagel with its King Arthur connections is only a few miles down the North Cornish Coast.
