Gardens in Cornwall- Lanhydrock House

Lanhydrock House and Gardens. The most visited National Trust property in Cornwall. One of the best examples of a high Victorian country house, surrounded by nearly 30 acres of lovingly tended formal gardens, laid out in 1857, mature woodland and hundreds of acres of parkland, all leading down to the River Fowey. In spring the camellias and rhododendrons are a visual delight, the tulips of the formal parterre a blaze of colour. In summer bedding plants continue the spectacle. In autumn the golden glows of the beech avenue frame the 17th century gatehouse.

may gatehouse Lanhydrock House. Dating from the 17th century, though all that remains from that period is the Gatehouse and the North Wing with the Long Gallery with its plasterwork ceiling. Remodelled in 1857, ravished by fire in 1881, and then rebuilt incorporating all the needs of a fashionable Victorian residence and what can be seen today. In total 49 rooms are on display, all overlooking the central courtyard. From the scullery, the larders, the kitchen to the dining room, with table set for dinner, to Lady Robartes Boudoir and the so poignant Captain Tommy's Bedroom.

Glendurgan. In the care of the National Trust. Like neighbouring Trebah a great subtropical garden. Created in the 1820s set in four wooded valleys leading down to the Helford. Best known for its laurel maze, rare plants and trees imported from all over the world, Dazzling display of camellias in early spring, the short lived spectacle of carpets of blue bells in full bloom on the grassy valley slopes for a few weeks in late spring.

Hydrangeas and foxgloves in early summer. Follow the trails across the stream down through thickets of bamboo, to the village of Glendurgan and the Helford River. Open mid Feb to end Oct.

Pencarrow. 50 acres of mature woodland, formal and historic gardens. A mile long drive lined by rhododendrons, spectacular in late spring. In March daffodils provide a superb backdrop to the house. Specimen conifers. A lake. A ice house. With a plant shop. Open 1st April to Mid October.

Pine Lodge Arboretum nr. St Austell. Extensive gardens including by the Lodge: herbaceous borders; a fernery; a woodland walk, and shrubbery's. The National Collection of Grevilleas. Elsewhere in the gardens, you will find: an acer glade; 4-acre pinetum, with a collection of 80 conifers, all different; an arboretum. Mediterranean and Southern Hemisphere plants growing here for all year round interest and colour. Water features include both a large wildlife pond, . Opening from Wednesday, 12th March to the end of October, open 7 days a week.

Tresco Abbey and Gardens, The Isles of Scilly

Tresco, Scilly Isles. The "Last Piece of England" where cars are banned, where there are never crowds and the only sounds are the waves and birdsong. These are one of the most remarkable sub-tropical gardens in the World- warmed by the Gulf Stream. The Gardens are open 365 days a year, from 1000 - 1600 hrs.

The Lost Gardens of Heligan.Nr Mevagissey. Those of us who have been lucky enough to have seen this garden restoration from its beginnings are always amazed at the Work that has been undertaken since our last visit. You may even see pineapples growing in the Pineapple Houses Explore the wonderful walled gardens, the 'Jungle Valley'. In season admire the straightness of the rows of vegetables in the Kitchen Garden.
